Peter, the Apostle, writes to the “sojourners of the dispersion” – to men and women who no longer share common ground in the cultural expressions of the many, or in “the fashioning according to desires of ignorance”. He designs his letter to men and women set apart for things eternal, who deliberately declare: ”We have not here an abiding city, but we seek after the city which is to come”.
Ours is an inheritance which sets us apart for a journey, for a perplexing venture, for an effort to reach things which at every point of the journey lie beyond human capacity and understanding. Called and “begotten unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away”. An inheritance which cannot be compromised, in no way sensitive to corruptive forces, never defiled.
Our inheritance is Davidic in its essence – its framework is an eternal covenant, like the one given to David to rest upon. Our inheritance is Davidic in its essence – because its foundation is the redeeming work of the Son of David, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our inheritance is Davidic in its essence – because it will find expressions in the near future of the coming Kingdom, in the coming of the King, Jesus Christ, to rule in Zion.
Ours is a journey towards a fully expressed reality of being heirs, eve co-heirs, with Jesus Christ. Ours is a journey, a journeying in the wilderness of our cities, away from cultural patterns and bondages. “For we have not here an abiding city, but we seek after the City which is to come.” Ours is a fellowship with men and women, fellow-heirs, saints in the making, who have decided to live in the full expression of the redemption wrought by our Saviour and King, Jesus Christ.
